Attorney General Inaugurates Panel on the Implementation of Justice Reforms

In recognition of the need to make the justice system more accessible, the government as inaugurated a panel on the implementation of justice sector reform. The inauguration which took place at the conference room of the Federal Ministry of Justice in August 2011 attracted a large turnout of media professionals.

Working Group on the Implementation of the Rome Statute Submits Report

The Honourable Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Mohammed Bello Adoke, SAN, on 22nd March, 2011 set up a Special Working Group on the implementation of the Rome Statute of International Criminal Court in Nigeria. The Rome Statute was adopted in 1998.

Law Officers Association of Nigeria Inaugurates New Executive Committee

On Thursday, August 11, 2011, at the Olusegun Obasanjo Hall, Federal Ministry of Justice, Abuja, the Law Officers Association of Nigeria (LOAN) inaugurated a new executive committee chaired by Roseline Tasha, an Assistant Chief State Counsel, International and Comparative Law Department.

Law Reporting

The mission of the department is to collect, collate and publish an authentic, credible, qualitative, rich and affordable Law Reports and to publish and circulate the Justice Journal and other legal and intellectual publications where contemporary legal and intellectual issues are discussed and analyzed which have or will have legal, political, social and economic impact on the lives of the citizenry and provide a sound legal framework and an affordable, reliable, and easy access to justice for all.

International and Comparative Law

The International and comparative Law Department has since 2005 represented the Ministry at Session of Working Group III (Transport Law) of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) which was entrusted with the responsibility to renew current laws and practices in the area of the international carriage of goods by sea with a view to establishing uniform rules.

Public Prosecution of Accused Persons in all Courts Defending Criminal Action from High Court to Supreme Court
Preferring Legal Advice to the Police, Other Law Enforcement Agencies
Providing Letters Rogerateries and Extradition and Mutual Legal Assistance Supervises External Solicitors
Prosecuting Cases in Court on Behalf of the Attorney Genera

Civil Litigation

This is one of the engine rooms of the Federal Ministry of Justice. Its functions are;
Instituting and defending civil actions on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria and its agencies
Providing legal opinion and advice to the Federal Government and its agencies on questions of law arising in the course of the conduct of Government activities.

Citizen Rights

The Citizens’ Rights Department was created in 2005 by an approval of the Federal Executive Council.

The department is comprised of a Director, Petitions and Mediation, a Deputy Director Human Rights, Claims and General Grievances and the following Divisions: Human Rights; General Citizens’ Grievance; Contractual and Small Claims.

Strategy

The Transformation agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan recognizes that the administration of justice in Nigeria is in need of reforms; not reforms for the sake of it but because Nigerians want a more effective and transparent system of justice which is accessible to every Nigerian. Also, the Constitution compels us to develop a system of justice which is in keeping with democracy and respect for human rights.

 

Against this background, the Ministry of Justice, in consultations with relevant government institutions and international development partners developed a comprehensive strategy plan for the FMOJ in line with our strategic objectives.

Vision

To provide fair, timely, accessible, and equal justice for all Nigerians, in an efficient manner regardless of their ethnic group, gender, marital status, age, economic status, disability, religion, belief, culture, language or any other attribute and to gain the confidence of the public in the administration of justice in Nigeria.

Mission

The Mission Statement and purpose of the Federal Ministry of Justice (FMOJ) is to administer Justice in Nigeria, and for all Nigerians, and oversee states’ legal and legislative services.

The FMOJ will carry out this mission according to the values that are in the Constitution and within the transformation agenda of the administration of President Jonathan.

The Nigerian Federal Ministry of Justice is the legal arm of the Federal Government of Nigeria, primarily concerned with bringing cases before the judiciary that are initiated or assumed by the government. It is headed by the Attorney General, who is also Minister of Justice and is assisted by a Permanent Secretary, who is a career civil servant.

The Attorney General of the Federation is Barrister Mohammed Bello Adoke, and the Solicitor General/ Permanent Secretary is Alhaji Abdullahi Yola.
